13 people got a healthy life from the organ donation of brain dead people

Lalitpur/ June 25, 13 people are living a healthy life with the organs of brain dead people in Nepal. According to the Executive Director of Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center, Professor Dr. Pukarchandra Shrestha, among those who came to the center for kidney and liver failure for treatment, 10 people received kidney and 3 liver transplants from the organs of the deceased, and they are living a healthy life.
Subject: Social Area No. Prof. Dr. Prof. Dr. Shrestha informed that 99% success rate was achieved when 1300 people were transplanted with kidney, liver, heart and other organs extracted from living and dead bodies.
“Due to unhealthy lifestyle, urbanization and unhealthy diet, diseases of kidney, liver and heart, cancer, respiratory, diabetes, high blood pressure occur. It is reported that 20,000 people suffer from kidney failure every year in the world. According to a survey conducted in 2010, 3,000 in Nepal every year. There are statistics of people’s kidneys and 1,000 people’s livers failing. The lives of those who have failed can be saved by donating organs from those who are brain dead. He said.
Similarly, he said that non-communicable diseases are the main cause of death in Nepal and said that 72 percent of people die from non-communicable diseases and 28 percent of people die from communicable diseases such as cholera, malaria, and dengue.
“Organ transplant work in Nepal started in 2008 from Veer Hospital and Teaching Hospital with kidney transplant service, 90 percent of kidney transplant service was successful at the beginning. Now kidney transplant service in Nepal is 100 percent successful.” He said.
He said that in the last five years, the transplants in Nepal have been 100 percent successful and more than 500 people have successfully gone home, and he has started a campaign to raise the organs of brain dead people every year.
In Nepal, in 1998, a law was introduced to enable kidney transplantation from living donors to limited relatives.
According to the Human Organ Transplantation Act 2072, there is a legal provision that living persons belonging to 51 relatives can donate organs. Similarly, the law of Nepal has legalized the transplantation of organs from brain dead people. In the case of those who are not related, it has also made provision for mutual exchange between two or more families.
He said that Spain is ahead in transplanting brain dead people. In Nepal, for the organ donation of brain dead people, the concerned person must have given his consent while he was still alive, otherwise, the donation can only be done with the consent of the deceased’s family. So far, 2500 people have contributed.
According to public data in 2008, 90 percent of patients die within a few months of kidney failure, while 98 percent of those who have received a transplant and 95 percent of those undergoing dialysis are still alive, he informed.
There is a legal system in Nepal where healthy persons who have reached the age of 18 can donate organs. Only a few months ago, an 81-year-old senior citizen donated a kidney to his 21-year-old granddaughter and is currently living a healthy life.
He informed that Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplantation Center, which is providing organ transplant services, is also providing services on public holidays. “There are only 13 days of vacation in a year. Apart from the 13 days of Dashain Tihar, our services are also resumed on other public holidays, the work of expanding the transplant service to all corners of the seven provinces and raising public awareness is continuing.” Prof. Dr. Shrestha said.
